OSCE/ODIHR sends election observation mission to the Czech Republic
PRAGUE 20 May 2002
Prague, 21 May 2002 — The OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) has established an Election Observation Mission in the Czech Republic to monitor the elections to the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic scheduled for 14 and 15 June.
Headed by Peter Eicher (U.S.), the Mission consists of eight election experts and long-term observers from seven participating States. In addition to a head office in Prague, mission members will also be based in major regional centers.
The Mission will assess the election process in terms of its compliance with international standards for democratic elections and national legislation. It will focus on the election campaign and media, pre-election preparations of electoral bodies and local authorities, the participation of national minorities, and election-related disputes resolution processes. The Mission will not undertake an observation of polling stations on election days.
The OSCE/ODIHR will issue a preliminary statement on the day after the elections and a comprehensive report about a month later.
