2001: A special year for children's rights
WARSAW 16 May 2001
WARSAW, 16 May 2001 (OSCE) - The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) is contributing to giving childrens' rights a special international focus during 2001, as the world prepares for the first ever United Nations General Assembly Special Session on Children, to be held in New York in September.
One of the major elements in these preparations in the OSCE region has been the Young Voices poll, a survey of the views of children and adolescents in Europe and Central Asia about basic issues of politics, human rights and society. Developed and co-ordinated by UNICEF, the poll was co-sponsored by the OSCE/ODIHR.
"I hope this important poll will be a launching pad for the start of serious OSCE activities on children's rights," said Ambassador Gerard Stoudmann, Director of the OSCE/ODIHR. "Since we are present throughout the survey area, we are in a unique position to assist with international efforts on this critical set of issues."
The poll results were presented in Berlin on 16 May.
