OSCE Advisory and Monitoring Group clarifies activities in Belarus

MINSK, 29 January 2001 - The OSCE Advisory and Monitoring Group in Belarus, in response to President Lukashenko's statement on Belarusian TV (27/01/01), reiterates the following:
The OSCE Advisory and Monitoring Group continues to be ready for further cooperation with the authorities, the political parties and non-governmental organizations - as confirmed and applauded by the Istanbul Declaration of the OSCE Summit on 19 November 1999, to which President Lukashenko was a signatory.

- Its activities promote the establishment of democratic institutions according to OSCE standards.
- It is for the citizens of the country to decide on their leadership; through open, transparent, democratic elections.
- According to the current Belarusian electoral code, it is the right of all citizens to undertake domestic election observation - to observe and report on the electoral process.
- The Advisory and Monitoring Group rejects any accusation, from whatever quarter, of engaging in activities of a non-peaceful or illegal nature.
- The budget of OSCE and of its organs remains under OSCE control.
