OSCE Moldova mission helps train experts assisting survivors of trafficking

CHISINAU, 20 May 2004 - A training course for social workers and psychologists who help victims of trafficking after their traumatic experience started today in Chisinau. The six-day workshop is financed by the OSCE Mission to Moldova and implemented by its partner, the non-governmental organization (NGO) La Strada.
"Recognising the human dignity of trafficked persons and improving protection services for victims of trafficking, is one of our main goals," said Liliana Sorrentino, the Mission's anti-trafficking officer. "It is vital to strengthen the professional capacity of social workers and psychologists working with trafficked persons and their families."
Training is conducted by experienced psychologists from the Bulgarian NGO, "Animus Association Foundation". Some 20 participants from different NGOs, state institutions and the International Organization for Migration are taking part in the training course which will focus on crisis intervention, psychological counselling, responding to psychological distress, communication and interviewing techniques, work with child victims of trafficking and their families. Long-term strategies for social inclusion are also elements of the training.
The workshop is part of the OSCE Mission's project Strengthening Protection and Assistance to Victims of Trafficking, Adults and Minors. This two-year project is based on a human rights approach and aims to strengthen capacities and infrastructures for identification, protection of and assistance to victims of trafficking.
