OSCE Parliamentary team visits Moldova

CHISINAU, 2 October 2000 - The OSCE Parliamentary Assembly's "Moldova Team" visited Moldova from 28 September to 1 October. The team was led by Dr. Kimmo Kiljunen, Member of the Parliament of Finland.
During the visit the team had meetings both with Speaker of the Moldovan Parliament Mr. Dumitru Diacov and the Chairman of the Transdniestrian Supreme Soviet Grigory Marakutsa. The team was received also by the Commander of the Operative Group of Russian Forces in Tiraspol, General Valery Yevnevich.
The team invited a delegation of both the Moldovan Parliament and the Transdniestrian Supreme Soviet to participate in the international parliamentary seminar on the modalities of self-government. The seminar is planned to be held mid-January 2001 in Finland and Sweden. It would begin in Stockholm and then continue in Finland on autonomous Aland Islands and be concluded in Helsinki. A special emphasis in this seminar would be on the Transdniestrian problem. It is foreseen that parlamentarians from the guarantor countries of the Transdniestrian solution, Russia and Ukraine would participate. Also Romania which will be chairing OSCE in 2001 will be invited as well as representatives of the European Parliament.
The Parlamentarians from both sides of the divided Moldova agreed to participate in such a seminar.
In the Military Base of the former Soviet Fourteenth Army in Tirasopl the team was allowed to see the warehouses of armed combat forces and ammunition stores. General Yevnevich explained the present stage of preparations of withdrawal of the Russian troops, armaments and ammunitions to which Russia has committed itself in the OSCE Summit in Istanbul in November 1999. According to Istanbul Declaration, withdrawal has to be completed by the end of the year 2002. Dr. Kiljunen became convinced that Russians are taking their commitment seriously and have started to prepare the withdrawal process. According to him this will positively contribute to the political solution of the Transdniestrian problem.
