OSCE Mission to Moldova helps young journalists develop investigative reporting skills
Twenty journalism students and young journalists from Balti, Chisinau, Comrat and Tiraspol successfully completed a three-day intensive workshop on investigative and data journalism in different regions, organized by the OSCE Mission to Moldova from 6 to 8 October 2017.
The workshop took place in Vadul-lui-Vodă, a town by the Dniester/Nistru River, from 6 to 8 October 2017, and was conducted by local and international media experts with expertise in transnational reporting and investigative journalism. The participants engaged in practical exercises and gained knowledge about how to work with journalists from other countries and how to collect and apply data from different sources. They also learned how open data could be used to help investigative journalism, and received training in practical skills such as searching and visualizing data in order to build and strengthen stories. They studied examples of how such transnational investigative and data-based journalism works in practice.
“This workshop has equipped students and young journalists with practical knowledge and skills that will help enhance their ability to collaborate on investigative projects with journalists from all over the country,” said Stephen Young, Deputy Head of the OSCE Mission to Moldova. “Events such as this will help to build contacts and facilitate co-operation among journalists and media outlets.”
The workshop is part of the “Building Confidence Across the Media Divide” Project implemented by the Mission this year. The aim of the project is to build confidence and provide opportunities for future co-operation between journalists and future journalists on both banks of the Dniester/Nistru River.
