Round table on autonomy in Gagauzia organized by OSCE Mission to Moldova
The OSCE Mission to Moldova organized on 15 October 2014 a round table discussion on Optimization and Implementation of Gagauz Autonomy, a report presented by Piligrim-Demo, a Comrat-based NGO, which aims to establish a mechanism for civil society to raise issues related to Gagauzia with central authorities.
The report compares different models of autonomies in Europe and different levels of territorial distribution of power with Gagauzia, focusing on the example of South Tyrol. The report also analyses the existing problems that have an effect on functional and efficient autonomy.
The round table was attended by representatives of Moldovan Parliament, including members of the working group on Gagauzia, Dumitru Diacov and Ion Creanga, Deputy Bashkan Valerii Ianioglo from the Gagauzian Executive Committee, and civil society.
The event was a part of an existing Mission project organized with Piligrim-Demo, which supports increased civic participation among youth and civil society in Gagauzia. The project also aims at supporting civil society within the autonomous territorial unit of Gagauzia, as well as ways of harmonizing national and local electoral legislation.
