Vocational education school invests in Kosovo's future
PRISTINA 23 July 2003
PRISTINA, 23 July 2003 - The Head of the OSCE Mission in Kosovo, Ambassador Pascal Fieschi, today inaugurated vocational training workshops run by the Danish Production School (DPS) in Kosovo's Zvecan municipality.
The school offers a combination of practical and theoretical education in a range of occupations such as metallurgy, carpentry, cooking and textiles. The aim is to equip young people who have had little education and limited work experience with new skills for their future.
"Young people are looking for opportunities to gain new and practical skills while gaining occupational experience," Ambassador Fieschi said. "This school has begun to fill an important niche."
The school and its workshops are a project of the Association of Danish Production Schools and DANIDA, the Danish Agency for Development Assistance. At present it is the only organization in northern Kosovo providing occupational training and personal development to young people.
"Everyone has a place in this society. This facility is a great opportunity to find out what you can contribute to the development and integration of society," Ambassador Fieschi added.
The OSCE Mission in Kosovo, through a grant of the Small Investment Minorities Fund (SIMF), is supporting the computer and textiles workshop with equipment. The computers will be re-used in future training programmes for municipal staff and civil servants. Products from the Danish school such as bookshelves and catering services will also be used in other SIMF projects.
The SIMF was established by the Ministry for Development Co-operation of the Netherlands and, in collaboration with the OSCE Mission, aims to support the integration of Kosovo's smaller communities into society. The Netherlands holds the OSCE Chairmanship this year.
