OSCE hosts workshop on media management in Kosovo
PRISTINA 26 May 2003
PRISTINA, 26 May 2003 - A five-day workshop on management and marketing skills for electronic and print media outlets has begun today in Kosovo.
The course, which has been organized by the OSCE Mission in Kosovo and will run from 26 to 30 May, aims at addressing the challenges of commercial sustainability and viability faced by local media outlets.
"At a time when many Kosovo institutions, including the media, are undergoing fundamental transformations, the ability of media outlets to consolidate their business operations can play a major role in securing their editorial independence", said Mustafa Eric, Media Development Officer at the OSCE Mission.
The workshop will try to give an impetus to media managers in developing new strategies or revising existing ones to strengthen their business operations and ensure the viability of newspapers and broadcasters as commercial entities.
Forty managers from both electronic and print media are participating and will discuss ideas for improving the economic future of media in Kosovo. The first day of the workshop is devoted to issues of print media, including problems of advertising sales and attracting greater readership. The following four days will be more practical, focusing on management methods and practices, innovative marketing techniques and developing a business plan.
Henrik Bo Nielsen and Jacob Mollerup, media management trainers from Denmark, will run the workshop and share with the participants their observations and experiences from a small media market.
The OSCE Mission in Kosovo has been working since 1999 in the province to promote a diverse and self-sustainable media sector that functions as an essential institution in a democratic society.
