OSCE Mission in Kosovo sponsors conference on women in civil dialogue
PRISTINA 11 April 2003
PRISTINA, 11 April 2003 - A conference on the role of women in civic dialogue, sponsored by the OSCE Mission in Kosovo and the Kosovar Civil Society Foundation (KCSF), will be held tomorrow, Saturday, 12 April.
The purpose of this conference is to encourage greater interaction and exchanges between civil society actors in the region through the sharing of experiences and good practices in promoting gender equality. Representatives from non-governmental organizations (NGOs) from Kosovo and Serbia proper will gather to identify ways of how women's NGOs can participate effectively in regional initiatives and networks. Such dialogue aims to create understanding and reconciliation.
"Peace building processes and the development of civil dialogue need to concentrate on the grass-roots leveland civil society organizations should reflect the interests of the people," said Ambassador Pascal Fieschi, the Head of the OSCE Mission. "Experience has shown that women's organizations are well able to move such processes forward and should be an integral part of any domestic advocacy network."
This conference offers an opportunity for open discussion and dialogue about the role of women in civil society. Examples and experiences will be given from Kosovo, Serbia proper, Albania, and Croatia. Participants - including the Mother Teresa Society and the Centre of Regionalism from Novi Sad - will develop strategies on promoting dialogue, tolerance and reconciliation initiatives between people and communities.
The OSCE has supported a civil dialogue between civil society actors from Kosovo and Serbia proper since early 2001. This work has included fostering the participation of women in all sectors of society, strengthening their contribution as decision-makers in both the political and social spheres of society.
Media representatives are invited to attend the opening remarks of Ambassador Fieschi and Dr. Dom Lush Gjergji at 9:00 on Saturday, 12 April, in the Hotel Grand in Prishtine/Pristina, as well as the rest of the conference proceedings throughout the day.
