Stronger representation for Kosovo women in new assemblies
PRISTINA 4 November 2002
PRISTINA, 4 November 2002 - The representation of women will significantly increase in the new Municipal Assemblies of Kosovo. Out of the 920 Municipal Councillors elected on 26 October, 262 are women, representing 28 per cent of the total of the elected municipal representatives.
The new seat allocation represents a marked increase when compared with the 8 per cent of seats women received following the 2000 Municipal Elections. It can be considered as a direct consequence of OSCE's commitment in undertaking all efforts to bring about a more substantial role for women in Kosovo.
The Central Election Commission Electoral Rule 8/2002, required political entities, when presenting their lists of candidates for registration, to have at least in each consecutive group of three candidates in the first two-thirds of the lists one candidate of each gender.
