Falsified signatures lead to political group's disqualification in Kosovo municipality
PRISTINA 4 October 2002
PRISTINA, 4 October 2002 - Due to a serious breach of the electoral Code of Conduct, committed by the political entity Coalition Return (KP) in the Dragash/Dragas municipality, the Election Complaints and Appeals sub-Commission (ECAC) has decertified the KP in that town, meaning that the political entity cannot participate in the election for the Dragash/Dragas Assembly.
The ECAC determined that KP had submitted a number of falsified signatures of support for the political entity, as well as offering financial compensation in exchange for some voters' UNMIK identification numbers.
In its investigation, the ECAC also found that 19 names appeared both on the KP list of supporters and that for the Gorani Citizens' Initiative (GIG). The individuals in this group, however, denied having signed KP's list.
The KP has also been fined EUR 1,500 for these offences. The actions in this case amount to an organized attempt to manipulate the electoral process.
Based on this decision, the Central Election Commission (CEC) has determined that votes cast for KP in Dragash/Dragas on 26 October will be considered invalid.
