Assembly of Kosovo Presidency visits Slovenia
PRISTINA 20 September 2002
PRISTINA, 20 September 2002 - The members of the presidency of the Assembly of Kosovo will return to Kosovo tomorrow afternoon, 21 September, following a visit to the Parliament of Slovenia. The OSCE Mission in Kosovo facilitated this trip, which began on 17 September, as part of the Assembly Support Initiative (ASI).
The President of the Parliament of Slovenia, Borut Pahor, hosted an official delegation, led by Professor Nexhat Daci, to further encourage contacts and cooperation between the parliaments Slovenia and Kosovo.
The Kosovo delegation had a number of meetings with their counterparts in the Parliament of Slovenia, including its leadership, the committees on agriculture, economics, and foreign policy, the Assembly commissions for Ethnic Minorities, Rules of Procedure, and European Affairs, as well as the Slovenian Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Today the delegation is visiting two bilingual schools and meeting with representatives of the Hungarian community in Slovenia.
The presidency of the Assembly of Kosovo has noted that more intensive co-operation with Slovenia could be of a significant benefit for Kosovo's economic development and democratic integration into European structures.
Mr. Pahor invited the Assembly of Kosovo presidency to Slovenia after he spoke at an ASI conference on "Parliamentariasm in Practical Terms" in Prishtine/Pristina in April 2002. This was the first official visit paid by a foreign delegation to the newly-established Assembly.
The OSCE, through the Assembly Support Initiative, is assisting the Assembly of Kosovo in easing contacts between parliaments as a means to share experiences of establishing a functional parliament in a transitional society.
