Candidate lists of Kosovo political entities approved
PRISTINA 10 September 2002
PRISTINA, 10 September 2002 - Approximately 5,500 candidates will be running for seats in Kosovo's municipal assemblies on 26 October. The Central Election Commission (CEC) at its latest meeting approved all 360 candidate lists for political entities contesting the Municipal Elections.
On election day, voters will only be selecting a political entity and not individual candidates. However, as part of making an informed choice, it still is important for people to know the names of those on candidate lists.
These lists are being made public today and will be available on the OSCE website at www.osce.org/kosovo. Lists will also be posted in every polling station on Election Day.
The registration of each candidate was verified by the OSCE to ensure that the conditions of the CEC's Electoral Rule 8 were fulfilled. Each list was also checked to ensure compliance with the gender requirement.
In this process, 219 candidates were found to be ineligible to stand as a candidate for the Municipal Elections. The reasons included not being a registered voter in the municipality for which they would be a candidate, being on more than one candidate list, as well as being a judge or prosecutor in Kosovo's judicial system, or presently serving in the Kosovo Police Service (KPS) or Kosovo Protection Corps (KPC).
Each candidate is also required to fill out a statement of income and assets. This is the first time that electoral candidates in Kosovo have been required to file statements, and statements will be available to the public for scrutiny. It marks an important step forward and is intended to enhance transparency for candidates and future elected members of the assemblies.
