OSCE Mission in Kosovo extends voter services period by one week
PRISTINA 14 August 2002
PRISTINA, 14 August 2002 - People in Kosovo have now one more week to go an OSCE Voter Service Centre in order to verify and, if necessary, amend their voter registration details for the forthcoming municipal elections this fall.
The OSCE Mission in Kosovo has extended the voter service period, which applies to eligible voters in Kosovo, Serbia and Montenegro, until 23 August.
"This decision was taken to make sure that the voters' list for the 26 October municipal elections is as accurate and inclusive as possible", said Ambassador Pascal Fieschi, the Head of the OSCE Mission.
The extension, which was approved after review of the operation and in consultation with the UN Secretary General's Special Representative in Kosovo, Michael Steiner, gives any citizen who is not yet registered for the fall elections, one additional week to have his or her name added to the voters' list. It also allows displaced persons to register as absentee voters for their previous municipality, and gives also more time for those who have returned to Kosovo since the last election to be added to the UN Civil Register.
In total, 30 Voter Service Centres - one in each municipality - will open again on Monday, 19 August, while mobile teams will revisit communities where there are large numbers of displaced persons.
The latest figures show that more than 37,000 people have already visited Voter Service Centres.
