Deadline approaching for postal Voter Registration
PRISTINA 29 July 2002
PRISTINA, 29 July 2002 - The deadline for all potential voters living outside Kosovo, Serbia and Montenegro to return by-mail voting applications for the 26 October municipal elections is now just over two weeks away - on August 11.
Over 78,000 application packages have been mailed to the home addresses of potential voters in over 35 countries. This immense effort is aimed at giving people the opportunity to register and cast a ballot by mail in October. With 15,000 applications already received, the OSCE is expecting a further large number to be returned before the deadline of August 11.
For anyone who still wants an application form, these can be obtained in the following way:
Applications are also being sent to all persons and groups who request them from the OSCE.
The postal registration period started one week before the voter services period to allow for turnaround time of mailings.
A person who successfully registered as a postal voter in 2000 or 2001 will receive a renewal application, but they must return their application with photo identification to the OSCE to confirm their identity and be registered to vote on October 26. People who tried to register in 2001 and could not prove eligibility have also been sent an application and are given the opportunity to reapply.
Potential postal voters are asked to send applications and supporting documents as soon as possible to the OSCE. To vote, postal voters must meet the same requirements as all other voters in and outside Kosovo, and show that they left Kosovo on or after 1 January 1998.
