Central Election Commission certifies eight political entities
PRISTINA 18 July 2002
PRISTINA, 18 July 2002 - With 100 days left until 26 October, the first eight political entities have been declared eligible to participate in Kosovo's second municipal elections.
At its latest meeting, the Central Election Commission (CEC) approved eight political entities - four citizens' initiatives and four independent candidates. This is the first group to be recommended to the CEC which has met all the requirements for certification. Each of the following entities will be on a single municipality's ballot in October:
The OSCE Department of Election Operations is continuing to examine the remaining 65 applications for compliance with all requirements, including the signature requirement. More decisions on political entities will be reached next week.
It was also decided, by a Chairperson's decision, that the Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) did not need to register as a political party with UNMiK. However, the DSS would still need to apply to participate in the municipal elections and supply all the required information and supporting material - including 100 signatures of registered Kosovo voters for each municipality in which they wish to run. The party's candidates would also need to be registered Kosovo voters.
The OSCE wants to ensure that the upcoming municipal elections will be inclusive. This means involving all Kosovo's communities and their political parties in the process.
