Registration of two political parties in Kosovo open for review
PRISTINA 28 June 2002
PRISTINA, 28 June 2002 - The Alliance for the Future of Kosovo (AAK) and the Kosovo Objective Party (KOS) had completed their registration requirements with the OSCE Political Party Registration Office. A final decision on their registration application will be given following a fourteen-day period when the public is invited to review the registration documents.
The OSCE Political Party Registration Office has been given the responsibility of registering political parties under the UNMIK Regulation 2002/8 "On the registration and operation of political parties in Kosovo". Once all registration materials have been submitted - including the party's programme, statute, and logo - they are made available to the public for review and comments.
According to the Regulation, "anyone who wishes to object to an application for registration of a political party on the basis of any of the provisions of the [] Regulation may submit such objections, in writing (together with any information or material substantiating the objection), to the Office within 14 days of the application".
The AAK - originally founded in 2000 by Mr. Ramush Haradinaj as a coalition of different political parties - has established a political party. The KOS is a new party recently created by Mr. Milje Popovic in Gracanica/Graçanicë.
Promoting transparency in the political party registration process is part of OSCE's continuing commitments in supporting the development of democratic institutions in Kosovo. The Political Party Registration Office is located in the OSCE Department of Election Operations building in Prishtina/Pristina. Anyone wishing to view the documents can come between 10:00-12:00 any weekday from 29 June to 13 July 2002.
