OSCE welcomes announcement of Kosovo municipal elections on 26 October
PRISTINA 7 May 2002
PRISTINA, 7 May 2002 - The OSCE Mission in Kosovo welcomes the announcement by the UN Special Representative, Michael Steiner, of October 26 as the date for the second municipal elections in Kosovo.
"The new election date will allow the Pillar III to forge ahead with its preparations for municipal elections and ensure that Kosovo has an election which is up to the OSCE's high standards of transparency, fairness and full participation by all communities," said Ambassador Pascal Fieschi, OSCE Head of Mission.
Local participation in all aspects of the election operations will be increased this year. This is a demonstration of the OSCE's continued commitment to the handing over of responsibility for election management to the people of Kosovo.
The OSCE Mission in Kosovo, working as the institution-building pillar (Pillar III) under the UN Mission in Kosovo, will be building on its experience of running the successful municipal elections in 2000 and the Kosovo Assembly election held last year. This date allows the full six month time-frame that is necessary to conduct elections while maintaining the standards necessary for operational preparations, including voter services - both in and outside Kosovo - and political entity and candidate certification.
UN Special Representative Steiner today had announced his decision to postpone the municipal elections in Kosovo, originally dated on 21 September, in order to allow maximum participation and transparency.
