OSCE sends Kosovo journalists on working trip to Switzerland
PRISTINA 21 March 2002
PRISTINA, 21 March 2002 - A group of six radio journalists from Kosovo are undergoing a four-day fact-finding trip to Switzerland to visit the Parliament and meet Swiss counterparts from German and French-speaking broadcast media in order to share their experiences covering sessions of Parliament.
The aim of the trip, organized by OSCE Mission in Kosovo and financed by the Government of the Canton of Basle, is to gain knowledge about working relationships between Parliament members, political leaders, officials, institutions, and media representatives.
Besides the differences, Switzerland and Kosovo have common grounds, such as their small size and the diversity of communities living in the same area. Switzerland, however, has a long tradition of co-operation and a feeling of solidarity amongst its communities, developing a unique and stable form of democratic government.
In Bern, the group will visit the Parliament and meet French, German and Italian-speaking parliamentarians. They will also have the opportunity to share professional experiences with journalists from the German-speaking Swiss Radio DSR, and will witness how radio covers parliamentary sessions. In Lausanne, the Kosovo journalists will meet French-speaking colleagues from Radio Suisse Romande.
Experiences and knowledge gained by the participants during this trip will be shared with other Kosovo journalists during the Media/Assembly workshop that OSCE is planning to organize in Kosovo in April.
The group composed of four Kosovo Albanians and two Kosovo Serbs journalists, among them three women, will be in Switzerland from 18 to 21 March.
As part of its institution-building mandate, the OSCE Mission is committed to developing the quality of journalism in Kosovo so people can rely on their media as the bearers of unbiased, impartial and accurate information, essential in any democracy.
