Polls open in Kosovo's assembly election
PRISTINA 17 November 2001
PRISTINA, 17 November 2001 - Voting has started in Kosovo's assembly election. The province's citizens will be able to cast their ballots within the next 12 hours, until 19:00.
Kosovo's electorate is 1.25 million strong. Voting will be taking place in 1,668 polling stations inside Kosovo and a further 191 in Serbia and Montenegro. The deadline for receipt of ballots from the 36,000 eligible voters outside Kosovo is 10:00 today; these ballots, which voters mail to Vienna, are flown to Kosovo.
The vote will elect a 120 member provisional Assembly, which will have powers in areas such as health, education and transport. Of those 120 seats, 20 are reserved for Kosovo's smaller communities.
There are 26 political entities contesting the election; of these, three are independent candidates. Among the 26 entities are a Serbian citizens' initiative, a Bosniak party, a Bosniak-Gorani coalition, and individually Roma, Egyptian and Ashkali parties.
Counting starts in the polling stations as soon as the polls close. Out-of-Kosovo votes are brought to a central location for counting. The partial results are scheduled to be announced on Monday evening, 19 November.
