OSCE welcomes funding for election projects in Kosovo
PRISTINA 8 October 2001
PRISTINA, 8 October 2001 (OSCE) - The OSCE Mission in Kosovo has welcomed the generous donation to election development from the European Agency for Reconstruction.
The OSCE will be responsible for dispersing almost 2.5 million euros to a variety of projects aimed at ensuring the widest range of participation possible in the election.
"The money is being used on projects for some of Kosovo's most vulnerable people - the disabled and the minorities," said Daan Everts, Head of the OSCE Mission. "It is also helping us to level the playing field for both political parties contesting the election and for the media covering it. This will truly assist us in ensuring fairness in the election campaign process, and beyond."
Assistance to the media is directed at providing coverage of the campaign, including the development of the infrastructure of the Kosovo Serb radio network, providing cash for newspapers to produce election supplements, and providing money for election programming on Kosovo-wide television. A lump sum is also going to each political entity to produce campaign advertisements.
Some of the money is going into work with minorities and with the disabled, to make sure they can fully participate in the democratic process. Women, people living in rural areas and community groups will benefit from training in a variety of areas to improve general office skills and increase understanding of the democratic process.
An ambitious project to work with Kosovo's disabled community has also been developed to ensure its participation in Kosovo's developing democracy.
The OSCE wants to see the coming Kosovo-wide election to be inclusive of all Kosovo's communities. The funding from the European Agency for Reconstruction will greatly assist the OSCE in reaching that goal.
