Roundtable on police and judicial co-operation to take place in Kosovo
PRISTINA 13 August 2001
PRISTINA, 13 August 2001 (OSCE) - The OSCE-run Kosovo Judicial Institute and Kosovo Police Service School are holding a two-day roundtable on ways to improve working relations between Kosovo's police force and investigative judges and public prosecutors.
It aims to familiarize those working in Kosovo's judicial system and the Kosovo Police Service with each other's roles and responsibilities. Participants will be presented with various cases of criminal offence, such as murder, and taken through the steps in their investigation from the scene of the crime to the case being presented before a court.
"The police and the judiciary need to be able to communicate effectively with each other to ensure that crimes are properly identified, investigated and appropriately sentenced. This mutual awareness of roles and co-operation will benefit the criminal justice system and assist in implementing the rule of law in Kosovo," said Nesrin Lushta, co-director of the Kosovo Judicial Institute.
Participants at the roundtable will discuss such topics as investigation at the crime scene, detention before and during the investigation, the importance of witness testimony and evidence to a case, and the role of the defence counsel.
The roundtable meeting will take place at the Kosovo Police Service School in Vushtrri/Vucitrn, on 14 and 15 August from 9:00 to 18:00 hours.
