Kosovo Law Centre sponsors seminar on human rights and legal protection
PRISTINA 2 July 2001
PRISTINA, 2 July 2001 (OSCE) - The Kosovo Law Centre, in co-operation with the Finnish Human Rights Project, is holding a seminar on human rights and legal protection in post-conflict Kosovo.
The seminar will bring together the Kosovo legal community and non-governmental organization representatives to discuss the current level of legal protection and respect for human rights, in judicial and administrative procedures, as well as in public institutions.
Over the past two years, the OSCE has made great efforts to build democratic institutions in Kosovo based on the rule of law and respect for human rights. New local structures include a judicial system, elected municipal assemblies, and a professional civil service. To build on these initial achievements, the Kosovo Law Centre recognized the need to address how applicable laws in Kosovo deal with human rights.
Local and international experts will give presentations on the protection of individual human rights within the legal framework and other institutions. Each presentation will include practical examples of how legal standards have been applied.
The seminar will take place in Prishtine/Prishtina on Monday, 2 July, from 9.00 to 17.00, at the Hotel Illiria. All media are welcome to observe the proceedings.
The Kosovo Law Centre was established by the OSCE Mission in Kosovo as part of its institution-building mandate. The Centre serves as a legal think-tank devoted to the cultivation of professional legal skills by providing technical and material assistance to the legal community. The Centre's goal is to promote democratic principals, multiculturalism, high ethical standards, human rights, and the rule of law.
