Training for new Municipal Assembly presidents in Kosovo
PRISTINA 15 January 2001
PRISTINA, 15 January 2001 - The first training seminar for the new Municipal Assembly Presidents in Kosovo is being held Monday and Tuesday, 15-16 January, at OSCE headquarters in Pristina.
The two-day session, which has been organized by the OSCE Institute for Civil Administration, will focus on conflict resolution and the promotion of tolerance. The session is being hosted by Dr. Johan Galtung, a Norwegian conflict resolution specialist. Dr. Galtung has helped mediate in more than 40 conflicts around the world, including conflicts in the Balkans.
This week's seminar is the first in a series of four that will be held this year for the 30 newly-elected Municipal Presidents. The others will examine economic development, citizens' participation in local government and the role of the opposition in the new assemblies.
The programme is part of a comprehensive series of training seminars aimed at assisting the new local government structures.
Training for the newly-appointed Chief Executive Officers is also scheduled to take place this spring. Towards the end of 2000, the new assembly members who gained seats in the October local elections received training on their roles and responsibilities. In September, as part of the regular training programme of the Institute for Civil Administration, Dr. Galtung conducted workshops in conflict resolution for senior municipal staff.
