Regulation amended for Central Election Commission in Kosovo
PRISTINA 20 December 2000
PRISTINA, 20 December 2000 - The present Central Election Commission in Kosovo will be dissolved and the terms of office for the current members will expire on 31 December 2000. This follows the announcement by Special Representative of the Secretary General Dr. Bernard Kouchner that amendments to Regulation 2000/65 have been approved.
OSCE Head of Mission Ambassador Daan Everts thanked members of the Central Election Commission for their work in organizing and running the recent municipal elections. "The Central Election Commission delivered an elections virtually unsurpassed in the region, especially when one considers that the process began from scratch," Ambassador Everts said. "We should celebrate the good memories of the first free and fair elections held in Kosovo."
With the approved amendments to Regulation 2000/65, the outgoing Central Election Commission has completed its task. The body will be reconstituted with new members, who will be appointed by the Special Representative of the Secretary General. The amended regulation and formation of a new Central Election Commission is part of the effort to prepare for and conduct Kosovo-wide elections.
Ambassador Everts added that this will provide an opportunity to tell the world that Kosovo is ready to go ahead with central elections. "I thank the CEC whole-heartedly for its hard work and commitment to the development of democracy in Kosovo," he said.
