Countdown to election day in Kosovo
PRISTINA 26 October 2000
PRISTINA, 26 October 2000 - With just two days to go to election day, boxes of ballot papers have begun making their way from the Central Counting and Results Centre in Pristina to destinations throughout Kosovo.
Ballot papers for Out-of-Kosovo Polling Stations in Albania, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Montenegro are already in situ.
Meanwhile, the first boxes of completed ballots from the Special Needs Voting Programme have already arrived at the Central Counting and Results Centre. The Special Needs programme, which began two weeks ago, will continue right up until the close of polls at 19:00 hours on Saturday.
351 special needs votes were cast during the first part of the programme, which facilitated homebound and disabled voters. This week, members of the Kosovo Police Service, who will be on-duty on polling day, cast their votes. Prisoners currently in detention in Kosovo, as well as detainees who have been released from Serbia, began voting yesteday. On Friday and Saturday, patients and hospital staff will vote at medical facilities throughout Kosovo.
As of yesterday afternoon, the International Organization for Migration office in Vienna had received 25,729 mail-in ballots from people registered to vote Out-of-Kosovo. The deadline for receipt of mail-in ballots in Vienna is midnight on Friday, 27 October. These ballots will arrive in Pristina on a specially chartered flight on Saturday afternoon. They will be transported directly to the Central Counting and Results Centre.
The majority of people, however, will cast their votes at Polling Stations on Saturday. This week, posters showing the range of voters who have been allocated to each of the Polling Stations, have been put up all over Kosovo. The posters are on display in and around Polling Centres. Voters should check the 10-digit number on their blue registration receipt to find out which Polling Station they should go to.
Polls will open at 07:00 on Saturday.
The period of silence on campaign activities comes into effect at 07:00 hours on Friday and will remain in effect until polls close at 19:00 hours on Saturday evening.
