OSCE condemns murder of Kosovo journalist
PRISTINA 13 September 2000
PRISTINA, 13 September 2000 - The OSCE Mission in Kosovo expresses its deep concern over what seems to be increased attacks on journalistic work. The OSCE condemns the murder of Shefki Popova, a journalist for Rilindja, who was shot dead outside his home in Vucitrn. The OSCE is also distressed that Marjan Melonasi, a journalist for Radio Television Kosovo (RTK), has been reported missing since he left work on Saturday. Such attacks have intent to chill the climate for free and independent media.
Freedom of the media is one of the most important elements in the democratization process, and harming or threatening journalists represent blatant and cowardly acts of intimidation. This is especially important in view of the upcoming elections on October 28. The legal framework for the elections clearly obliges political parties, candidates and their supporters to enable journalists to carry out their professional duties. Even minor acts of intimidation that interfere with the freedom of expression are to be resolutely rejected.
Ambassador Daan Everts extends his condolences to the family of Shefki Popova and expresses his hope for the return of Marjan Melonasi.
