Countdown towards end of registration in Kosovo
Pristina 30 June 2000
PRISTINA, 30 June 2000 - The final countdown to the end of the first phase of civil and voter registration is starting. There are just 15 days until the registration centres close. And that countdown is going to be marked by events across Kosovo.
A travelling street theatre is continuing its performances in towns throughout the territory in the coming week. On Saturday they plan to surprise people in Mitrovica, Vucitrn/Vusshtri, Gniljane/Gjilan and Ferizaj/Urosevac. The group does not announce where it will be holding its registration play, so people should look out for them in the markets and the squares.
Prizren plays host to a second Youth Concert, the first rocked Pristina until the early hours of the morning last week. T-shirts, c-d vouchers and mobile phones are among the prizes that will be available for those who prove they have registered when they go the concert.
Next Sunday, July 9th, sees a Race to Register in Pristina as runners will dash through the city centre to registration sites. The races for men, women and children start at 9:00 am and there will be a variety of prizes.
But there is a serious message among the summer fun: that is that if people have not registered by July 15th they will not be able to vote in upcoming elections.
If people fail to register they will be ignoring a civic duty. And they will be barred from taking part in a fundamental development of Kosovo the vote for local people to work for the local community.
The countdown is on.
