More than 500 Kosovo journalists receive training
PRISTINA 23 June 2000
PRISTINA, 23 June 2000 - A mixed group of 20 Kosovo journalists is in Rome for a three week long training session organized by the OSCE Mission in Kosovo and the Italian Association of Journalists. It is being held at the Libera Universita Internazionale degli Studi Sociale.
The group is the latest in a long line of journalists being trained through the efforts of the OSCE. Those in Italy include seven Serbian and two Turkish journalists. There are nine women among them. The journalists work in radio, television and print across Kosovo.
During the first two weeks of the course the journalists are receiving training on subjects such as investigative reporting, editorial writing and documentary work. They will also have workshops on a variety of issues including propaganda and the media, political reporting and reporting on community affairs. In the third week the trainees will be working at stations and on newspapers in towns on the Italian Adriatic coast.
By the time of Kosovo's planned election later this year more than 500 journalists will have received training through the efforts of the OSCE, both in Kosovo and abroad. Some of this has been on-site at radio stations and with individual newspaper journalists covering basic skills; other current and planned courses will look at more advanced training and specifically at election training.
Austria, Canada, Italy and Norway are among the countries that have played host and provided trainers; other trainers have come through professional organisations such as Press Now and the International Federation of Journalists. There has also been training for senior managers.
The OSCE has its own team of professional journalist trainers who co-ordinate the efforts of international donors as well as providing direct training. As part of its institution building role, the OSCE has been putting great emphasis on training for journalists to ensure that Kosovo develops a democratic, qualified media sector.
