22 Political parties and one coalition apply for Kosovo elections
PRISTINA 19 June 2000
PRISTINA, 19 June 2000 - Twenty-two political parties and one coalition of six parties are preparing to run in the planned municipal elections this autumn. The parties have submitted their applications to the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe.
Parties are running in all of the 30 Kosovo municipalities. Presently there are a total of 248 applications which OSCE staff need to verify. They are checking to ensure that the 100 signatures that each party collected in order to receive certification are valid. They will then be submitted to the Central Election Commission for certification.
The deadline for independent candidates and citizens' initiatives to submit their application for certification is today. Many of these are expected to apply at OSCE field offices and regional centres.
More details about certification and the parties that want to contest the municipal elections will be provided at the OSCE weekly briefing on registration and the elections. David deBeer, head of political party services in the OSCE Election Department, will be on hand to provide information.
All media are invited to attend.
