Ceremony to mark 500,000 people registered in Kosovo
PRISTINA 7 June 2000
PRISTINA, 7 June 2000 - More than a half-million people will have put their names on the Kosovo civil and voter registry by the end of this week. To recognize this milestone, OSCE Head of Mission Daan Everts and the Head of the Joint Registration Taskforce, Jeff Fischer, will be making a presentation.
They will be joining a team working at a registration site outside Pristina on Thursday, 8 June, the day when registrations received are expected to surpass the 500,000 figure. The officials will be presenting a person who represents the 500,000th registrant with a certificate and flowers.
There are now more than 190 registrations sites operating throughout Kosovo, allowing everyone who is a Kosovar to put their names on the civil and voter registry. This will give people the right to vote, and also provide them with a United Nations identity card. It will also allow them to apply for United Nations travel documents if they wish. The deadline for civil registration is 15 July 2000.
Media representatives are invited to attend the ceremony marking the 500,000th person to register. The OSCE will provide transport to the site.
