Deadline extended for independent candidates and citizens' initiatives wanting to run in Kosovo elections
PRISTINA 9 June 2000
PRISTINA, 9 June 2000 - Independent candidates and citizens initiatives wanting to run in the Kosovo municipal elections in the autumn have an extra week before they have to be certified by the OSCE. The Central Election Commission agreed to this extension at its last meeting.
Now independent candidates and citizens' initiatives - groups of people uniting over one political issue - have until 19 June 2000 to certify. They still have to collect 100 signatures from eligible voters in the municipality in which they will be standing and provide a 100DM deposit, refundable if they win a seat.
Political parties and coalitions still must submit their applications for certification by 11 June.
The Central Election Commission decided on the extension because, by definition, independent candidates and citizens initiatives do not have a party organization behind them to get all the signatures needed.
The Central Election Commission will make its decision on certification 18 days after the closing date. If the information is incomplete, or wrong, applicants have three days to correct it. If the Commission rejects an application, the applicants have two days to appeal.
These rules have been established by the Central Election Commission to allow for smooth preparations for the elections with many independent candidates and citizens initiatives taking part.
