OSCE sponsors journalists' code of conduct conference
PRISTINA 10 March 2000
PRISTINA, 10 March 2000 - As part of its continued efforts to develop a professional, democratic media, the OSCE is organizing a two-day conference on the "Rights and Obligations of Journalists". It has brought together the Association of the Media of Kosovo and experts from the Brussels-based International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) to discuss international journalistic standards, the new regulation on hate speech and a Code of Conduct.
Journalists from across Kosovo have been invited to the first day of the conference in Pristina, on Saturday, to talk about these issues. It is hoped that by gaining a greater understanding of the role of a democratic media, and especially the obligations set down in a Code of Conduct, the standards seen in the Kosovo media will improve.
The Association of the Media of Kosovo will be holding a separate meeting with the IFJ on Sunday. This is to provide a final review of the Code of Conduct which the Association passed on its own initiative. The OSCE is pleased to see this commitment to self-regulation.
In the view of a number of observers, the quality of some of the journalism in Kosovo falls below accepted international norms and at times is highly irresponsible.
The OSCE is pleased that the Association asked for guidance on journalistic conduct and standards from an internationally recognised journalistic body. The OSCE will continue to assist the Association in its efforts to develop a highly professional media in Kosovo.
Note: Saturday's meeting is open to the media. It will take place at The Grand Hotel from 0930 to 1730
