Training to start for journalists in Kosovo
PRISTINA 31 March 2000
PRISTINA, 31 March 2000 - The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe is launching a training course for local radio journalists from across Kosovo, to begin Monday 3rd April. The four-week course is being organised in conjunction with the United Nations Development Programme and will be carried out by international experts. UNDP is contributing $100,000 towards the cost of international experts and equipment required for journalistic training.
Approximately 40 journalists are due to take part and will learn the basics of journalism. In the first two weeks, journalists from Canada and the Netherlands will cover such fundamental issues as what is news to how to write a story.
The third week of the course will take place in June, when the Kosovar journalists have had the opportunity to practice their newly-learned skills. There will be some re-assessment of what they learned earlier as well as instruction on in-depth, investigative reporting. The final week will be held in September; at this point the journalists will learn how the media should cover an election.
The training will take place at three OSCE Regional Centres simultaneously, in Gnjilane/Gjilan, Pec/Peja and Prizren. The same 40 journalists are expected to attend all parts of the course.
The OSCE is committed to assisting the development of the media in Kosovo; a fundamental part of this is through training. The OSCE in Kosovo has its own dedicated training team which has already been working one-on-one with some media outlets. Further international courses, facilitated by the OSCE are being planned.
