Kosovo registration more successful in rural regions
PRISTINA 12 June 2000
PRISTINA, 12 June 2000 - With little more than a month to go until the first phase of the Kosovo Civil and Voter Registration closes, a clear disparity has emerged. A greater proportion of people living in the rural regions of Kosovo are registering than those living in towns and cities.
People in the rural communities have been heading to mobile registration centres knowing they are only there for a short period of time or to the centres at the heart of their villages. But it appears that in Kosovo towns, people are delaying their trip to the registration centre.
The chance to get on the civil registry, and thereby obtain a United Nations identity card and the opportunity to apply for travel documents, runs out on 15 July. After that time, it will also be too late to get on to the electoral roll. Those who do not register will not be able to vote in the municipal elections planned for this autumn.
Jeff Fischer, head of the Joint Registration Taskforce, will be on hand to answer questions about this urban-rural divide as well as provide an update on registration as a whole at the OSCE regular briefing.
