Third class graduates from Kosovo Police Service School

PRISTINA, 25 April 2000 - The OSCE Kosovo Police Service School graduated its third class on Saturday, 22 April.
The 230 students have completed a nine-week course at the school in Vucitrn/Vushtrri. They covered many topics including democratic policing, legal affairs, criminal investigation, forensics and traffic. The graduates now will go on patrol with UNMIK police officers for 19 weeks before being given executive authority.
The recent class included 56 women and reflects all faces of Kosovo society, with 15 Serbs, four Moslems, two Bosniaks, one Macedonian and one Turk.
The Police Service School is now running two classes concurrently. The fourth class, with 219 students, is half-way through its training, while a fifth class will starts on Monday, 24 April. This new class will be the largest to date, with 347 students expected. They will include 23 Serbs and five other minority students as well as 42 women.
The staffing at the police school has also increased to match the new numbers. There are 172 international police trainers from 20 countries.
The OSCE sees the Kosovo Police Service School as a fundamental part of the development of a democratic police force which is based.
