NGO resource centre opens in Strpce/Shterpce, Kosovo
PRISTINA 12 June 2000
PRISTINA, 12 June 2000 - The first OSCE resource centre for non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in a Serbian area of Kosovo has opened its doors. OSCE Ambassador Daan Everts welcomed community leaders to the new facility in Strpce/Shterpce.
The NGO resource centre aims to be a non-political forum where all members of the community can meet and work on rebuilding their society. Through the centre, the OSCE provides access to office space, resources and training for the community's NGOs.
"It is vital to have such a centre," said Ambassador Everts. "We hope that the Serbian community will use it, and will become involved in all aspects of the redevelopment of Kosovo."
The centre in Strpce/Shterpce is regarded as a concrete step towards co-operation and confidence building between the Serbian and international communities in the area.
The opening of this latest centre brings to six the number of NGO resource centres in Kosovo. A total of 10 are planned including one in the predominately Serbian town of Leposavic/Leposaviq, which is due to open later this month.
