Broadcasters to carry Kosovo registration and voter information
PRISTINA 26 May 2000
PRISTINA, 26 May 2000 - All radio and television stations in Kosovo are being required to air public service announcements on the civil and electoral registration process. They will also have to carry similar messages as Kosovo prepares for elections.
The ruling was passed by the Central Election Commission. Public and private stations will have to broadcast these short announcements several times a day, free of charge, from 24 May throughout the election process.
The OSCE and the United Nations have worked together on preparing these radio and television announcements. The announcements will be given to each station along with guidelines on when and how they are aired.
The announcements are part of a campaign to educate people about their rights and obligations in the electoral process. They will include information about what documents are needed to get on the civil and electoral register, how to register and who will have the right to vote.
The Central Election Commission wants to ensure that Kosovo's first democratic elections later this year are free, fair and informed. It sees broadcasters as having a civic and journalistic responsibility to inform the public about a process that is so vital to Kosovo's future and calls on all broadcasters to abide by these guidelines.
