Good governance a prerequisite for the cohesion of society, says High Commissioner Thors in Skopje
SKOPJE, 18 February 2015 – OSCE High Commissioner on National Minorities Astrid Thors joined the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office, Serbian Foreign Minister Ivica Dačić on a visit to Skopje, as part of the Chairmanship’s efforts to support democratic reforms and enhance regional co-operation.
Thors reiterated her serious concern about the current political situation and its implications for long term stability. As a conflict prevention instrument, the successive High Commissioners have been engaged in the country for more than two decades in an effort to address the challenges to building a stable multi ethnic State. The latest political developments, however, may put the integration of society as a whole at risk, she warned.
“Pluralistic democracy, the rule of law and human rights, including minority rights, are prerequisites for the integration of society,” said Thors.
Thors said it was essential to ensure that efforts to deal with the current political crisis are done in a way that restores trust in the institutions. “Unless all the necessary guarantees are provided, the crisis may deepen with possible long term consequences for the integration of the country. It is important that the international community is paying close attention to the process,” she said.
“At times of crisis, ethnically polarized countries are particularly vulnerable to divisive agendas that aim to exploit existing inter-ethnic tensions in society,” said Thors. She called on political leaders to take responsibility and ensure that the ongoing developments do not take on an inter-ethnic dimension.
During her visit, Thors met with the main leaders of the coalition government as well as representatives of the opposition and civil society.
