OSCE experts to visit Gudauta base in Abkhazia, Georgia

TBILISI, 15 June 2002 - A team of four OSCE military experts, headed by Colonel Laszlo Belagyi of the OSCE Mission to Georgia, will today visit the Gudauta base in Abkhazia, Georgia, as preparation for later inspection.
The invitation to come to the Gudauta base was conveyed by General Valery Yevnevich, Deputy Commander of the Russian Land Forces, who is also in charge of the Russian peacekeeping operations, to Ambassador Jean-Michel Lacombe, Head of the OSCE Mission to Georgia, on 11 June in a meeting at the OSCE Mission headquarters in Tbilisi.
General Yevnevich stated that the Gudauta military base had been disbanded in accordance with the agreements achieved during the OSCE Istanbul Summit in 1999. He added that arms and equipment had been removed and only a contingent of logistics personnel was left.
The visit of the OSCE expert team is being conducted after consultations with the Georgian authorities.
