Support for democratic transition of Mediterranean partners focus of OSCE conference
Ways to support the OSCE partner countries in the Southern Mediterranean was the focus of the annual OSCE Mediterranean Conference in Budva, Montenegro on 10-11 October 2011.
“Democratic transition is a long-term process, which requires persistence and patience. It can fall victim to delays and setbacks, and needs the committed support of all sectors of society, as well as of the international community,” said OSCE Secretary General Lamberto Zannier.
Representatives from OSCE participating States and Partners for Co-operation Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Morocco and Tunisia discussed policing and the role of the armed forces in democratic societies, promoting human rights, fundamental freedoms and the rule of law, electoral reform and good governance.
“OSCE expertise in supporting democratic processes in its own participating States is widely recognized,” said Zannier, adding that the Organization is “ready to share our experience and enhance our co-operation with those Partners who seek it.”
