BISHKEK, 24 March 2005 - The Personal Representative of the OSCE Chairman-in-Office for Central Asia, Alojz Peterle, called on all opposition forces in Kyrgyzstan to work towards a peaceful resolution of the current political crisis.
"The opposition now has to shoulder a lot of responsibility, especially with regard to the maintenance of law and order," he said in Bishkek. He added that it was important to build consensus on the way forward for the country.
Mr Peterle also reiterated the OSCE's readiness to mediate to help achieve a solution and offered assistance in ensuring a peaceful and democratic transition. He expressed hope that a special session of Parliament, planned for later on Friday, would create a solid framework for political stability in the country.
Mr Peterle welcomed the fact that serious bloodshed appeared to have been avoided. He expressed concern about reports of looting in some parts of the country and called on all sides to behave in a peaceful and responsible manner in the interests of all the people of Kyrgyzstan.
