SOFIA 11 October 2004
SOFIA, 11 October 2004 - Afghanistan's President Hamid Karzai expressed his great appreciation and gratitude for the participation of the OSCE Election Support Team in his country's first-ever presidential elections on 9 October.
During a phone conversation with the OSCE Chairman-in-Office, Bulgarian Foreign Minister Solomon Passy, President Karzai shared his optimism over the high turnout in the elections, which is positive for further democratic developments in the country. Even unfavourable weather conditions failed to deter people from exercising their democratic right.
The OSCE Chairman-in-Office emphasized the Organization's continued commitment to fully supporting democratic development in Afghanistan, which is of particular significance for the international community.
Minister Passy reiterated his invitation to Afghanistan's Foreign Minister, Abdullah Abdullah, to take part in the 6-7 December Sofia Ministerial Council, which is expected to take important decisions for the future of the OSCE.
