SOFIA 11 August 2004
SOFIA, 11 August 2004 - OSCE Chairman-in-Office Solomon Passy said today he is following with great concern the developments in Moldova, related to the settlement of the Transdniestrian conflict.
Among others, "finding a solution to the Moldovan Latin script schools in Transdniestria is of great importance to the comprehensive settlement," Bulgarian Foreign Minister Passy said.
The Chairman-in-Office said he appreciated the recent visits to Moldova of the representatives of the Russian Federation and the European Union. He added:
"We will continue our efforts to ease tensions between Chisinau and Tiraspol and promote the positive settlement of the pressing issues and the conflict as a whole."
In this regard, the OSCE Chairman said he is planning to send a special envoy to Moldova very soon.
On 22 July, the 55-nation OSCE Permanent Council condemned the actions by the authorities in Moldova's Transdniestria region, that prevent schools which use Latin script from functioning properly, as "irresponsible and provocative".
