OSCE Chairman-in-Office to visit Turkmenistan on Monday

THE HAGUE, 28 February 2003 - The OSCE Chairman-in-Office, the Foreign Minister of the Netherlands, Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, will visit Turkmenistan on Monday, 3 March.
During his visit, the Chairman-in-Office will meet President Saparmurat Niyazov and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Rashid Meredov, to discuss the priorities of the OSCE Chairmanship such as the fight against terrorism and various forms of illegal trafficking, including of human beings.
The OSCE is the only European security organization in which Turkmenistan participates. To continue the dialogue with this country is therefore of importance to the Netherlands as Chair of the OSCE. This dialogue includes the implementation of OSCE principles and commitments. In this context, the situation in Turkmenistan itself will also be discussed.
Minister de Hoop Scheffer will also visit the OSCE Centre in Ashgabad in order to get a better idea of the role the OSCE can play in Turkmenistan. The activities of the OSCE Centre concern the promotion of security and stability in the region. In line with the OSCE's comprehensive approach to security, the mandate also covers political and economic aspects of security, as well as human rights.
