New OSCE Chairman-in-Office takes up office

LISBON, 8 April 2002 - The new OSCE Chairman-in-Office (CiO), Portuguese Foreign Minister Antonio Martins da Cruz took up his office on Saturday, 6 April.
Having served in the Portuguese Foreign Ministry for 30 years, Minister da Cruz (55) was his country's Ambassador to Madrid since 1999, before he was appointed as the new Minister for Foreign Affairs.
After receiving a law degree from the University of Lisbon and completing post-graduate studies in the University of Geneva, he joined the Diplomatic Service in 1972.
One of the major assignments of the Minister was his appointment to Mozambique, before its independence, with the task of installing the Portuguese Embassy and Consulates General in that country.
Antonio Martins da Cruz had served in his country's representations in Cairo (1976-1979), at the United Nations in Geneva (1979-1984) and was the Ambassador and Permanent Representative to NATO and the Western European Union (1995-1999).
Minister da Cruz also worked as the Director of the European Integration Department of his ministry (1984-1985) and as a Diplomatic Advisor to Prime Minister Cavaco Silva from November 1985 until January 1995.
Minister da Cruz, who is married and has one daughter, has also taught international relations for six years in the Lusiada University of Lisbon.
