Chairman-in-Office Geoana commends Kazakhstan for abolition of exit visas
BUCHAREST 2 August 2001
BUCHAREST, 2 August 2001 (OSCE) - The Chairman-in-Office of the OSCE, Romanian Foreign Minister Mircea Geoana, took note with appreciation of the removal, by the Kazakh Government, of the exit visas system, following the decree on 28 July.
The Chairman-in-Office would like to commend the Kazakh President, Nursultan Nazarbayev, and the Kazakh Government for abiding by their previous assurances on this matter.
By abolishing the exit visa system, Kazakhstan has confirmed its commitment to the relevant OSCE standards in the field of freedom of movement of persons, as they were stated in the initial CSCE Helsinki Final Act and subsequent CSCE/OSCE documents.
Mr. Geoana encourages the other OSCE participating States from the Central Asian region to take similar actions in regard to the abolishment of the exit visa system.
