Chairman-in-Office calls for continuing dialogue with Belarus

BUCHAREST, 22 May 2001 (OSCE) - The Chairman-in-Office of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), Romanian Foreign Minister Mircea Geoana, called for sustained and continued efforts of the OSCE Advisory and Monitoring Group in Belarus (AMG) towards improving the dialogue with the Belarusian authorities, other political forces and civil society in Belarus.
On 18 May 2001, the Chairman-in-Office invited Ambassador Hans-Georg Wieck, Head of the AMG, for consultations in Bucharest.
During the meeting, the Chairman-in-Office confirmed his trust in the Head of the AMG and his activities directed to the strengthening of the democratic process in the country. The Chairman-in-Office stressed the need of continuing talks between the European institutions and the AMG with Belarusian authorities on improvements of the framework conditions for the forthcoming presidential elections.
