Chairman-in-Office regrets holding of so-called referendum in South Ossetia, Georgia
BUCHAREST 9 April 2001
BUCHAREST, 9 April 2001 - The OSCE Chairman-in-Office, Romanian Foreign Minister Mircea Geoana, has noted with regret that, in spite of the strong position of the OSCE on this issue, the South-Ossetian so-called referendum on "Adoption of the Constitution of the Republic of South Ossetia" took place on 8 April. Such an illegal and void act cannot help the efforts underway for a peaceful solution in this part of the OSCE space.
The Chairman-in-Office requests all the parties concerned to relaunch efforts for a peaceful solution on the South Ossetian conflict, taking into account the progress achieved during the last years.
In this respect, the Chairman-in-Office fully supports the preparations for the Joint Control Commission plenary session which will be convened soon, which represents a good opportunity to advance towards solving the pending issues, in accordance with OSCE standards and commitments.
The Chairman-in-Office hopes that in spite of the so-called referendum the efforts toward a lasting peace in Georgia will be continued and further strengthened.
